Nigeria: Lagos to Offset Pension Arrears- Ekene Okoro
Lagos — Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, at the weekend reiterated his administration's commitment to offset outstanding pension liabilities of 142 per cent.
The governor gave the assurance at the 2014 Pen Down Ceremony in honour of 13 retired permanent secretaries, held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, last week.
According to the governor, despite the fact that the Federal Government imposed the outstanding pension arrears on the state, it would be catered for in the state's 2015 budget, to demonstrate its commitment to the wellbeing of retirees in the state.
Fashola, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire also promised that government would reduce the bottlenecks often encountered by retirees in accessing their pension benefit before the expiration of his tenure.
He said that the Lagos State Government was adjudged the best operator of the Contributory Pension Scheme in July 2014 during the 10th anniversary of the commencement of the scheme.
"I wish to state that from these and other notable programmes, our government is quite receptive to retirees in view of its appreciation of their selfless services, especially during their most active period in life", the governor said.
Commending the 13 retirees for serving the state meritoriously, Fashola lauded them for contributing their quota to the socio-economic and political development of the state.
You served and helped the government implement its programmes and policies aimed at creating a new and better Lagos. I must say that the state will not forget these worthwhile efforts but will continue to relish your mentorship, experience and wise counsel for a long time," he said.
